And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8
The origin of Memorial Day goes back to the Civil War era on May 30, 1868, when it was initially named “Decoration Day”. The heartbeat of a group of Union veterans was to honor the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers with May flowers in full bloom (Memorial Day) and commemorate their sacrifice. And the tradition of Memorial Day continues today to remember and be thankful for those who sacrificed their lives to preserve our nation’s sovereignty and destiny.
The purpose of this post is to also think about another warfront, not one launched on earthly territory, but the war we now find ourselves entangled with on a supernatural plane. And that is the war of faith your soul is engaged with here on earth.
An enemy is roaming the earth today who is out to destroy us individually. His name is satan. He hates and despises God and everything and everyone associated with God’s plan and purpose. That includes you. And so you have a personal Memorial Day to celebrate, today and every day. What warrior are we to remember? The innocent One, Jesus Christ, who gave his life on a cross over 2,000 years ago. Let’s look into this.
God Asks Himself A Question
“What can I do or what can I create to reveal to all of creation the essence of who I am and display the fullness of my being? For in my heart, I am – holy, mercy, truth, love, justice, and judgment” (Psa 89:14; Gen 24;27; Psa 25:10, 57:10, 85:10, 100:5 & Job 37:23; Isa 9:7, 56:1; Jer 23:5).
If this is true, God looked ahead to a dimension called time and envisioned an innocent Lamb slain on a tree at a place called Calvary to bring hope, mercy, grace, redemption, forgiveness, love, and eternal life to a broken and hopeless people. And God said, “I have just answered my question”.
God’s Love Mission Begins
Time began and so did the mission at Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Eternity has no beginning and no end. Only time does. God reserved the best of his initial plan on Day 6 when he created beings, mirror images of himself, to fulfill this mission. He knew from the start these beings would soon fail him, fall into sin, and a wall of division would separate them from his presence. But he knew what looked like a failure of His making would become the fullness of his glory:
Though their image of him buried deep within their hearts would be marred, flawed and distorted, He knew some through their faith in Him would eventually recover from their blindness and the lens of their heart would then clearly see: the God who created them (as the Father), the God who redeems them (as the Son, Jesus as Savior) and as God the Spirit who continually infuses eternal life into them (as the Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit).
When You See Jesus, You See God
Going back to the question asked earlier, to say that God sent someone other than Himself to answer and fulfill his own question of how to reveal His true being to all of creation is one way to diminish its poignancy and legitimacy. How much more powerful it is to know that God wrapped himself in the fleshly garment of humanity to walk, speak, and live among the same creations He formed on the sixth day of creation.
God knew no better way of revealing himself than by becoming himself. And that process began with a young maiden in the obscure town of Bethlehem (Isa 7:14; Luk 1:30-33).
The mission the Lord set out to accomplish in the beginning continues to this day. And that mission is to reveal to creation “how great thou art” and to unfold the magnificence of his glory through his body, the body of Christ.
So today we remember not only the fallen soldiers and warriors of our past, but also Jesus, the one who died for all of humanity as he continues his mission to fight and protect those who will believe on his name and preserve them until he returns to earth the second time without sin (Heb 9:28).
Jesus came the first time as a Lamb. The second time he comes will not be as a lamb, but as a lion, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.
Blessings to you in Jesus’ Name
Amen to these words of yours: “How much more powerful it is to know that God wrapped himself in the fleshly garment of humanity to walk, speak, and live among the same creations He formed on the sixth day of creation.”
I can’t wait for His return.
Blessings ~ Wendy
